The American Advertising Federation (AAF) is different from any other organization because we have a three-level, multi-dimensional network of professionals that represent all disciplines of advertising. Our goal is to educate advertising professionals and students, monitor legislative issues, recognize excellence, drive traffic to all businesses, and help build our economy.


Legislative Update February 22

Tallahassee, Fla. Yesterday, the House Appropriations Committee voted 18-12 to approve and advance a measure that would fund Visit Florida (Florida’s tourism marketing) to the tune of $25 million. That’s about one-third of what Governor Scott requested. The Senate also wants more funding, but to become law, the House and Senate must agree to the exact same language and amount.

The House committee’s language allocating the $25 million to Visit Florida caps the amount in such a manner that it can go no higher in another year without an amendment to the bill. It also implements tight controls and significant oversight as to how that money is spent.

HB 7005’s next step in on the House Floor during session which begins March 7.

Enterprise Florida, the state’s economic development agency was allocated zero funding by the House.

AAF Pensacola Presents Silver Medal Award February 21

Pensacola, Fla. AAF Pensacola presented the Silver Medal Award to Brent Lane during the 2017 AAF Pensacola American Advertising Awards Gala, held on Friday, February 17 at the Hilton Pensacola Beach Gulf Front. The annual dinner and awards presentation was attended by more than 200 individuals in the local advertising and media businesses. AAF Fourth District Governor-Elect Mara Clark presented the award to Lane.

“It’s an honor to join the amazing group of advertising and media professionals who have won the Silver Medal Award over the years,” Lane said. “I would never in a million years have thought I would have had the privilege to be recognized by my peers in advertising. I am thrilled to be considered someone who has made the kind of impact that this honor represents, for my company, my community and my family.”

Beginning his radio career at the tender age of 14 in Modesto California, Brent Lane recently celebrated a decade on air in Pensacola on the Cat Pak Morning Show. In 2009 he was named the ACM Personality of the Year by the Academy of Country Music.

Believing in success through service, Brent is the voice of Pensacola. He has served as master of ceremonies at fundraising events for numerous area non-profits. Brent is a recognizable face of Pensacola locally and nationally. Lane is past-president of Manna Food Pantries Board of Directors and is currently in his third term on the Board). He is a 2009 graduate of Leadership Pensacola.

“AAF Pensacola is pleased to recognize Brent’s work to champion our industry and honor Brent for his steadfast support of local community causes,” said Chris Kenney, president of AAF Pensacola.

Founded in 1959, the Silver Medal Award is AAF’s highest honor. It recognizes men and women who have made outstanding contributions to advertising, been active in furthering industry standards, exhibited creative excellence and demonstrated responsibility in areas of community development. Nominations are reviewed by a panel of judges that include former Silver Medal Award recipients, current and past AAF Pensacola presidents and board members.

AAF Pensacola Announces 2017 ADDY® Award Winners February 20

Pensacola, Fla. AAF Pensacola presented 114 ADDY® Awards for advertising creative excellence to 24 different companies in print, digital and broadcast categories. The presentations were made at the 2017 AAF Pensacola American Advertising Awards Gala, held on Friday, February 17 at the Hilton Pensacola Beach Gulf Front. The annual dinner and awards presentation was attended by more than 200 individuals in the local advertising and media businesses.

Of the more than 200 entries received by AAF Pensacola, 45 gold ADDY® Awards and 48 silver ADDY® Awards were presented. Entries were judged based on creativity, originality and creative strategy.

Top awards of the evening went to the “Best of Show” winners. idgroup captured the Best of Show in Print for their logo design for Acumen Medical Imaging + Interventional and the Best of Show in Digital for their integrated campaign done for Inspera Health and Best of Show in Broadcast went to Gulf Power for We Were There video.

Of the more than 170 entries in the student competition, 33 gold ADDY Awards and 61 silver ADDY® Awards were presented to to 48 students from three local colleges and universities.

Pensacola Christian College student Emily Haines garnered the Student Best of Show for her 5 Major Myths About Foster care commercial and received a $500 scholarship from AAF Pensacola.

More commonly known as the ADDY® Awards competition, the American Advertising Awards receives more than 40,000 entries across the country, competing at three different levels – local, district and national. Gold winners from the AAF Pensacola American Advertising Awards will advance to competition at the district level.

The ADDY® Awards Competition is sponsored by AAF Pensacola, a member association comprised of advertising and media professionals. Winners at the local level now move on to compete at the district level against entries from AAF clubs across Florida.

Advertising Day on the Hill

AAF’s Advocacy and Action: Advertising Day on the Hill is fast approaching. This exciting event will be held on Thursday, March 30 with a preconference dinner on Wednesday evening, March 29. AAF’s unique strength in Washington, DC is as a grassroots organization and the Day on the Hill is a time for those grassroots to be heard. Attendees will be briefed on the issues by policy experts, hear from lawmakers and regulators and walk the Halls of Congress delivering the advertising industry’s message.

The Day on the Hill is FREE to all AAF members, but registration is required. Sponsorship opportunities are available as well. Register early and come to Washington, DC in March to make your voice heard.

President and Congress Focus on Tax Reform

President Donald Trump and top lawmakers have identified comprehensive tax reform as a priority issue as the new Administration and Congress begin their work together. At this point in time, proposals on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue are expressed only in broad generalities.

President Trump has pledged to lower the corporate tax rate and provide simplification by eliminating many of the preferences and deductions that litter the code. However, no specifics have been given as to which preferences and deduction will be limited.

In the House of Representatives, Speaker Paul Ryan has released his “Better Way” agenda that includes a “Blueprint for bold pro-growth tax reform.” The Blueprint proposes to lower the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 20 percent and to shift the code, “from the current outdated ‘worldwide’ regime to a ‘territorial’ system with competitive low tax rates.” How this would impact advertising is being studied, but obviously will depend on many of the plan’s details that have not yet been released and/or determined.

AAF has met with both Republican and Democratic tax staff on the House Ways and Means Committee and will continue to forcefully advocate on behalf of maintaining the current tax statues of advertising and a fully deductible normal and necessary business expense.


Senator Targets DTC Advertising

During a recent Senate consideration of budget reconciliation, Senator Al Franken, D-Minn., considered introducing an amendment to disallow the tax deduction for the direct-to-consumer advertising of pharmaceutical products. Advertising industry representatives quickly contacted Senators to urge opposition to the amendment. Senator Franken ultimately chose not to offer the proposal. The Senator has in the past sponsored legislation to eliminate the deduction for DTC advertising so we anticipate he may try to raise the issue again.

FTC and FCC Receive New Leaders

Commissioners Maureen Ohlhausen of the Federal Trade Commission and Ajit Pai of the Federal Communications Commission have been named as the new Chairs of their respective agencies.

The elevation of Chairman Pai is particularly significant for the advertising industry as he was a strong opponent of previous Chairman Tom Wheeler’s proposed new privacy rules for broadband providers. AAF was opposed to the proposed rules which would expand the definition of “sensitive data,” to include web browsing and application use data when linked to a device alone. Sensitive data requires a consumer’s opt-in to use or share. This is would be a significant departure from accepted industry practice and customer expectation that the collection and use of web viewing and application use data for advertising purposes is subject to an opt-out choice. The rules also would have applied only to Internet Service Providers, only one small part of the Internet ecosystem.

AAF and many of our industry colleagues have filed a petition for reconsideration with the FCC asking for a withdrawal of the rules. We have also signed a letter sent to Congressional leaders asking Congress to enact a Notice of Disapproval.

2014-2015 Public Service Campaign Announced December 31

AAF Pensacola has officially announced Independence for the Blind of West Florida as their selection for the 2014-2015 public service campaign. Annually, AAF Pensacola selects a non-profit organization for a public service advertising campaign directed to that organization’s specific needs. The AAF Pensacola Board of Directors extensively reviewed the applications and selected Independence for the Blind of West Florida (IB West) to receive this year’s campaign.

Over the next few months, the AAF Pensacola Public Service committee will work with the organization’s leaders to determine which advertising and marketing services are needed and will begin the development of a plan that will raise awareness for IB West within our community. About Independence for the Blind of West Florida (IB West)

Independence for the Blind of West Florida is a not-for-profit organization that serves the blind in our area from Pensacola to the Apalachicola River, an area which encompasses 10 counties.  They are funded in part by the Florida Department of Education, Division of Blind services.  They are the only nonprofit that is entirely devoted to educating the blind and visually impaired in West Florida. Their mission is to teach independent living skills, computer and adaptive technology, and to provide vocational training, and employment-related services to people who are blind or visually impaired so they can achieve maximum independence. Each year their counselors log more than 6,000 hours of instruction time working with more than 200 clients throughout the ten county service area.

The Pensacola chapter of the American Advertising Federation presented its 2014 America Advertising Awards for advertising creative excellence February 21 at the Hilton Pensacola Beach Gulf Front. More than 200 local advertising and marketing professionals attended the annual gala.

Of the more than 250 entries received by the AAF Pensacola from professional and student members, 55 gold American Advertising Awards and 82 silver American Advertising Awards were presented. Entries were judged based on creativity, originality and creative strategy.
